Stumbled upon this on Wikipedia:
"In 1931 Gandhi visited London for a period of 3 months for talks on the future of India, he based himself at Kingsley Hall in Bromley-by-Bow and was enthusiastically received by East Enders. It is said[7] that during his stay Gandhi visited the Boleyn Tavern and drank cream soda while discussing radical politics and football with local people.
Gandhi was a keen football fan[8] and already had a strong connection to West Ham United through his friendship with its founder, Arnold Hills, while living in London completing his law studies in 1888-91. During this period Hills brought the young Gandhi onto the executive committee of the London Vegetarian Society. Gandhi also met Charlie Chaplin in nearby Canning Town.[9]"
Literally never knew any of this.
Anyone got anything else interesting to add? Any stories or anecdotes?

My Uncle Andrew a die hard hammers fan was born about 1918 and lived in Poplar.
As a child he would play in the streets with his mates. The local MP. I think was George Lansbury., a very popular figure with the locals and especially the kids. When he walked to his home the kids would surround him and become very excited.
My uncle said one day George was seen coming down the road with a darkie. The kids thronged about George as usual and were very interested in"the darkie". In his presence they fell silent. It was his eyes my uncle said. When he placed his hand on my head all I could see were his eyes. That darkie was Ghandi.

Genghis Khan was a hammer. They named a pub after him which used to stand on the corner of Katherine Road and Romford Road called the "Bearded Mongol". knocked it down to put the police station up

Gandhi was mates with Arnold Hills whilst he was studying law in London. Both were in the London Vegetarian Society (Hills was Chairman)
